The Missing Piece in Helping Families Rebuild After Violence

When people think about the Sanctuary Program, they often picture the finished result.

A warm bed. A comfortable lounge room. A dining table where a family can share a meal. A safe, welcoming home where adults and children can begin rebuilding their lives after domestic and family violence.

What many people don’t see is everything that happens behind the scenes to make that possible.

Creating a Home Takes More Than Furniture

Every Sanctuary begins with an empty property. Through the generosity of donors, volunteers and supporters, Friends with Dignity transforms these empty spaces into fully furnished homes, helping adults and children move forward with dignity, safety and hope.

Furniture is donated. Volunteers give up their weekends. Household essentials are sourced, sorted and delivered.

But there is one critical piece that often goes unnoticed – getting everything where it needs to go.

As Friends with Dignity Founder and CEO Manuela Whitford explains:
"Most people don't think about how the furniture actually gets there. We can have donations, the volunteers, and the home ready to go, but we still need a way to get beds, lounges, dining tables and household essentials to families who need them."
The Challenge of Growing Demand

Every week, Friends with Dignity supports adults and children moving into safe accommodation after escaping violence.

As demand for services continues to grow, so does the need to transport furniture and essential household items across Queensland and beyond.

A dedicated delivery truck would significantly increase the organisation’s ability to respond quickly and efficiently, helping more families access the support they need when they need it most.

It would allow volunteers to establish more Sanctuaries, reduce wait times and expand the reach of practical support programs.

The Impact So Far

This year alone, Friends with Dignity has:

Since inception, the organisation has established more than 1,000 Sanctuary homes across Australia and supported thousands of adults and children impacted by domestic and family violence.

Behind every Sanctuary is a family rebuilding their life. Behind every delivery is a volunteer helping make that fresh start possible.

Why Community Support Matters

Friends with Dignity has always been powered by community. From donated furniture and household goods to volunteer time, fundraising efforts and corporate support, every contribution helps create practical change for families rebuilding after violence.

A delivery truck may not seem as visible as a fully furnished home, but it plays a critical role in making every Sanctuary possible. It helps bridge the gap between generosity and impact, between donated furniture and a family in need, and between an empty house and a home.

Helping Deliver Dignity

As Friends with Dignity continues its mission to support adults and children impacted by domestic and family violence, community support remains at the heart of everything we do.

Whether through volunteering, donating, fundraising or simply helping spread awareness, every contribution helps create safer futures for families rebuilding after violence.

Every family deserves the opportunity to start again with dignity, safety and hope.
